| HISTORICAL BACKGROUND ON THE SVGHRA:
The SVG-Human Rights Association which is Registered under the Companies Act of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines 1994 was formed in June 1986 . The Association received its first funding in November, 1988 which enabled us to open an office and employed two persons on a continuous basis: (1) A Co-ordinator and an Assistant.
- The Association is government by its Constitution, which sets out its and objectives as follows:
- To work to promote the observance of human rights in their various aspects: civil, political, economic, social and cultural in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
- To promote the education of Vincentians on their human rights and responsibilities
- To collate, record and publicise abuses of human rights
- To seek ways and means to remedy abuses of human rights, whether through the courts, other tribunals, workers organization or otherwise, as the case ma require.
- To liaise with and become affiliated to other human rights organizations in the Caribbean and further afield, as the Association deems fit.
In 2001 with the help of the Swedish NGO Foundation for Human Rights we develop a Strategic Plan for the Association focussing on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Civil and Political Rights, and Gender Concerns. We are presently seeking funding to carry projects on either of the aforementioned rights.
Coming out of that Strategic Plan is our MISSION STATEMENT:
THE SVGHRA IS COMMITTED TO PROMOTING AND PROTECTING THE CIVIL, POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS OF THE PEOPLE OF SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES THROUGH EDUCATION, TRAINING, REPRESENTATION, DOCUMENTATION AND ADVOCACY AND BY NETWORKING TO INFLUENCE THE GOVERNMENT AND OTHER AGENCIES.
Elections of Officers are done every two years. It is a membership organization.
