The SVG-Human Rights Association has been invited to participate in a Commonwealth Workshop on Promoting Human Rights Defenders to be held in Kingston, Jamaica from 4-5th February,2003. Mrs. Inez Cuffy, Co-ordinator , will be representing the Association.

The Workshop is organized jointly by the Human Rights Unit of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Attorney General’s Chambers in Jamaica, with assistance from the International Service for Human Rights.

The Workshop will discuss human rights concerns including:

• The United Nations Declaration on Human Rights Defenders;
• Freedom of Expression, Association and Assembly;
• The role of the State in promoting and protecting human rights;
• The role of National Human Rights Institutions and their Interaction with human rights defenders

Presentations will also be made by Regional organizations on their work relating to human rights.

A release on the workshop main decisions will be published by the Association.
