ACHIEVEMENTS
Some human rights work and activities done by the svghra during the past ten years.
CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
Ever since its inception in 1986 the SVG-Human Rights Association has been struggling for the abolition of the death penalty. There have been some few successes, where we were able to get reprieve for persons condemned to be hanged. But, there is a hard and long struggle ahead to achieve the abolition of this cruel, inhuman, and degrading punishment.
The struggle take two forms: human rights education to enlighten the public and the politicians that the death penalty is not only cruel, inhuman and degrading, but that it is not a deterrent to the crime of murder. At one instance, three men were executed on the same day in the earlier part of a month; before the month ended three more murders were committed.
The SVGHRA was instrumental in getting the minimum age at which juveniles can be executed be increased from 16 years to 18 years. Our struggle is continuing for the complete abolition of capital punishment.
