WHAT WE DO

ACHIEVEMENTS

Some human rights work and activities done by the svghra during the past ten years.

ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS

Economic, Social and Cultural Rights have not had much attention in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. We hasten to add that the SVGHRA held a very successful two-day Seminar\Workshop on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, with emphasis on Housing Rights and Evictions.

This activity was very well attended and was well publicized. It led the SVGHRA on its new beginning in promoting ESC Rights. This will be an important and challenging part of our work in the future. It was resourced and presented by the Centre for Housing Rights and Evictions of Geneva, Switzerland.

The SVGHRA held another seminar in the year 2000, on “Women in Politics and Women’s Economic Rights.” This showed up the fact that women are still being discriminated against in access to credit, to executive positions in private enterprise and in achieving elevated positions in politics.

Generally, workers rights are not readily observed. There have been no increases in wages for workers who come under the Wages Councils, for over ten years now. The Association intends to hold activities on many of the various specific ESC Rights. We shall continue on Housing Rights and Evictions, and start on the right to a proper environment and the right to work, workers rights and social security. We see this as a long term concern for the advancement of the Vincentian people.
