ACHIEVEMENTS
Some human rights work and activities done by the svghra during the past ten years.
STREET CHILDREN
We did not include the issue of the growth of a large number of street children in the programmes on children, which were mentioned above. That is because this is a relatively new human rights problem which needs to be addressed properly at this time.
The present government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has shown concern about the problem. Our first aim as a human rights organization is to research the problem to find the causes for the growth of street children, by meeting and interviewing many of the children and also their parents and seeing the home conditions from which they left to go on the street. After extended research the way should be clear to find solutions. Here is where the local government can then come in to use their financial and other resources to help solve this problem.
In summary, the human rights problems in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at the present time, and the way to attack those problems are as follows:
- The need for the further promotion of Womens Rights in especially the matter of domestic violence.
- The need to continue promoting Childrens Rights in accordance with the provisions of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
- The need to campaign for the end of Corporal Punishment in schools and in the Courts.
- The need to struggle against the implementation of the Death Penalty.
- The need to promote the implementation of economic, social and cultural rights in all their various aspects.
- The need for the continuation of Human Rights education in general.
- The need for Penal Reform and the implementation of Alternative sentencing in criminal cases.
- The need for Constitutional and Electoral Reform.
- The need to struggle against corruption
- The need to continue the struggle against Police Brutality and illegal Police operating methods.
- The need to work in collaboration with the Aids Action Group and Government in preventing the spread of HIV\AIDS.
- Collaborate with the National Council for Older Persons and Government in addressing the need and welfare of older persons.
- The need to Research the problems which caused children to make the streets their homes and also Juvenile Justice.
